As someone who follows the trend in the media industry. I realize that social media is like another level of entertainment, popularity and marketing platform all-in-1.
TikTok gain fame because of the lockdown, people feel bored so they resort in making TikTok content. It is full of comedy content that let’s us feel entertain and refresh at home. Especially for someone like me, who are hyperactive, seasonal travel and cannot stay in one place for too long.
WHAT IS TIKTOK?
TikTok is the social media platform where you can share funny videos or your dance move with your audience. It has 30 second and 60 second video format with all editing tools that you can use easily. It also help you to know what the latest music trends.
The platform is designed by Byte Dance a China Company. It also helps the musician to promote their music with their dance moves. There are lots of musician whose already inside the platform. For example Dua Lipa, Jason Derulo, Justin Bieber, and his wife Hailey Bieber. Even the Korean celebrity RAIN and BoA.
You can save your favorite video, sound and even follow your favorite creator. You can also browse other videos on For Your Page (FYP). It has unique algorithm that could easily garnish fame for users who happened to receive lots of like to be appear in FYP.
FYP is work like search explorer on Instagram or other social media. Yet, TikTok has been kind enough to let most users who get tons of views to appear multiple times on FYP. It’s reported that users who produce simple funny content to gain fame on this platform, even if the video looks dumb and stupid or even to the extend of non-sensical.
WHAT IS REELS
A new advanced feature from Instagram. It let the user create dance move video for a maximum of 15 seconds. It has built-in music and editing option for you. Users can appear in the explore tab if they set their account to the public. REELS will appear in creator news feed once they shared it.
Right now, REELS only available for few users on France, Germany, Brazil in testing phase. Of course, it allows users to monetize their own content yet it is still a hope to be able to monetize it like IGTV as what Instagram promised.
IS REEL GOING TO REPLACE TIKTOK?
My own thought and opinion will say NO. Imagine when that creator has to create content and audiences. Then boom! Instagram makes REELS just to make us leave TikTok. That’s not gonna happened in a single time. The only thought I have been thinking is the creator will use these 2 platforms because:
- Those who have TikTok also have Instagram but they may be more popular on TikTok than Instagram, so by having REELS they will gain more audience on Instagram too.
- Not all people want to download TikTok, so REELS may gain positive results once it released.
- The creator will be published on these 2 platforms because they wanted to grow their audience on both platforms. So 1 single content but 2 publishers platform.
- TikTok has lots of choices to edit video while REELS may take time to launch their editing videos yet REELS provide monetization and a new column on user profile (as seen on featured image)
- Tiktok let you save sound from other user and use it while Instagram REELS have built-in music.
So, the thought of having REELS to replace TikTok might happen, if the TikTok audience slowly move back to Instagram but it is very unlikely to happened in short period of time, given that the 2 platform have different UX and UI design.
Not all people like to use Instagram nor does want to make another TikTok account, given this 2 platform has received quite incredible of negative amount of feedback.
THEN, WHY INSTAGRAM CREATE REELS? IT IS NOT ORIGINAL
As I have mentioned above that as FACEBOOK owns social media company. Facebook team has always been following what’s trending on internet then they try to adapt to it by making their own features yet adapting with the trend.
TikTok video has been trending lately, therefore if Facebook team wanted to add-on REELS as the new features on Stories, it is quite predictable given that Instagram always updating their platform. The last time is Snapchat stories to Instagram stories and now TikTok video to REELS on IG stories.
If that’s not the only reason, then perhaps to justify is because Facebook/ Instagram are too scared to not follow what’s trending. They just doesn’t want to end up like NOKIA or Blackberry. Being left alone.
Social media has always been the industry that ever-changing and evolving. It is a tough industry because the company need to keep on guard what’s gonna be the next-trend and also develop their own ideas. Users can move from one social media to another in an instant. It took couple of minutes to make an account and then left the other social media entirely. Like, Friendster and My Space.
Even some of social media influencer has noticed it and they decided to make their own website to let their audiences to follow up on which social media they hang around.
